Each committee member has a group of clubs to contact and liaise with to assist the flow of two-way communication on all matters of wider interest to the District.

For the 2001/2002 Rotary year, clubs have been challenged to introduce a "new international project"; either from the RIBI Project Library or one of their own choice. This will be in addition to the regular Base Line Projects we regularly support:
· Aquabox
hotels Hannover · Rotary Shoe Box
· Book Aid
cheap hotels in Montpellier · Spectacle Collection
· Tools for Self Reliance
which require little fund-raising and can also involve local schools and organisations, helping raise the awareness of Rotary.

MEDICAID is a Rotary (Cross Gates, Leeds) organised international project to provide medical aid for developing countries.
Medical practitioners receive a large quantity of pharmaceutical samples each year, not all of which are used. They also update or change their equipment from time to time (as do hospitals). The replaced instruments, stethoscopes, ophthalmoscopes etc., are often still in good condition. These drugs and equipment can be put to good use in developing countries.
District committee member Phil Davies (Bassenthwaite)be progressing this project throughout D1190 His other contact details are in the District Directory.

Continued support for POLIO PLUS is needed to ensure the eradication by 2005.

I have received the following request and 8-page attachment from George Mercer (Rotary Doctor Bank) via RIBI. Your club may be able to assist with small amounts of materials and goods, which would be of help.

George Mercer's letter is as follows:

Dr Heather Roberts, Post Academic Course Co-ordinator, University of Nottingham, has contacted me to see if RDB and Rotary in general, can help with medical supplies for the Kilimanjiro Christian Medical College (KCMC) at Moshi, Tanzania. In recent years, RDB has sent several doctors to serve at KCMC, which is a 450 bed teaching and referral hospital serving the communities in northern Tanzania. It is a well-run hospital but lacks so very much of what we take for granted. Dr Roberts is aiming to fill a 20ft container of medical supplies for the hospital to be sent out from Nottingham in October 2001.

I am attaching a long list of items they need which has come from Mrs Jenny O'Keefe at KCMC with whom we liase for RDB assignments. Anything is welcome, and instructions are included for the way donated items should be sent to Nottingham for the container. Contact names are below.

You will see that they will take items for other charities in that part of Tanzania and items for schools etc. We will liase with the Rotary Club of Arusha to find out if they want any particular items for the schools they support in Tanzania.

Kind regards
George Mercer
