PUMP USER STORY

Being a Pumper The Mini ME!!

Hotel a Germania I am a keen tennis player, so my first question was can I still play tennis with it on!!For the past 15 years of being diabetic my doctors were always confused to why each time I did a BSL at various time of the day it was within normal limits, but my HbA1Cs were high (12).

I have now been on the Minimed insulin pump for 5 months now and I am loving it. My first 24 hrs on the pump were so perfect that my endo was amazed and Minimed had to increase my BSL cause they said it was too dangerous to be that good on the first 24 hrs.Within 4 weeks my HbA1C was down to 9.3 from 12.4.

I have learned to adapt to my busy tennis playing schedule. I play three times a week and have noticed a dramatic effect on my game. I now know that my mood swings on the court were blood sugar related and my game has improved 100% with the pump (with my BSLs being normal). I have also noticed that I no longer get the paralytic leg cramps that I used to get. (I actually rated the leg cramps worse than my Diabetes if that is possible)

I must admit some people were hesitant about me getting the pump things like I dont like the idea of you being attached to a machine all the time, but I knew it was the only way of getting out of having 6-8 injections a day.

Wearing the Pump

I have gotten used to wearing the pump now with the thanks of a great pair of Nike bike shorts. Not that I am promoting them but they have a zippered pocket in the back so my pump fits in there for tennis under my skirt/dress and it cant get hit if people aim for me at tennis (not that there would be any people out there like that?).

Wearing skirts/dresses for work is fine with the help of pump garter belts so they can be worn on the thigh and hidden away with long or short skirts.Otherwise people look at it as a mobile phone I guess we are lucky we live in the age of technology.

Helpful Hints

Do take the time to think about whether it is right for you. There are some issues that you may have to deal with.

Bled hotels 1. Are you going to feel comfortable having a pump attached to you 24/7?
cheap hotel in Karpun2. Are you going to feel comfortable answering peoples questions when they ask you What is that?

I call my pump the Mini ME (like Minimed) as I believe that it is a part of me that I have never had before. But believe me when you have double the energy, can sleep in on the weekend, can have the other half of the slice of cake that your mum used to cut off because it was too much, you will feel like a new person I know I do!!!!
